SOLO tRAVEL 101: TIPS FOR TRAVELING ALONE

Always Trust Your Gut

When traveling solo, you make all the rules. You decide what you what to experience, where you want to go, and who you interact with during your travels. This is why trusting your intuition is so important. You want to be in situations where you feel safe and comfortable but you should also be open to having new experiences.

Never Post in Real Time

You never know who is watching your social media. For safety purposes, it’s best to never post your current location in real time. If I’m posting a place, this means that I have already left that location.

Don’t Put All Your Money in One Place

Keeping your money all in one place leaves you vulnerable. I generally spread my money out in different compartments and bags. There are also travel items that you can buy that keep your money hidden. For example, you can check out scrunchies with hidden pockets on my Amazon storefront. I also utilize a safe when it is available.

Look Up the Popular Scams Before Visiting a Country

Many countries have popular scams. For example, in countries with metered taxis, sometimes drivers will say that their meter is broken in attempt to overcharge you for a ride. In other countries, people will give you the wrong change when you buy something with the hope that you will not notice. Being aware of these kind of scams helps you to avoid them.

Share Your Travel Itinerary with a Family Member or Friend

While traveling solo, I always share my itinerary with a loved one. I usually add it to a share iPhone note so they are aware of any changes. This allows you to travel with the comfort that someone knows where you are at all times.

Use a Door Stop Alarm or Portable Door Lock for Extra Safety

These items are a couple of the best investments you can make for solo traveling. They add an extra layer of security. The door stop alarm sends out a high alarming noise and stops the door if someone tries to enter your accommodation. The portable door lock is an extra lock that stops anyone from entering your room as well. Check these items out on my Amazon storefront.

Use a Ride-Sharing App When Available

I love ride sharing apps because they allow for a record of where you travel and who your driver is. You can generally share your travel status with friends as well so that they know that you arrived at your destination safely. Apps like Uber and Grab are great depending on the country you are visiting.

Be Open to Meeting New People

You can make lifelong friends from all around the world while traveling solo. You have the ability to meet people that you never would have met if traveling with others. I have friends in countries all over the world like France,  Switzerland, Germany, and Australia. This is great because if I ever visit their countries, I can have a real local experience.

Embrace Spontaneity

I love planning but I always embrace spontaneity. For example, on my Vietnam trip, I canceled my solo dinner plans when I met this cool Australian couple that invited me to explore Beer street with them. We ended up having an amazing time people watching, exploring, and eating tons of street food. You never know what adventure you’ll end up on my just saying yes.
