TIPS FOR BEGINNER DRONE PILOTS
Have you ever lost a camera or phone on a trip before? Did you lose travel videos that you can never get back? Well this happened to me a few years ago in Aruba. Unfortunately, my DJI Mavic Mini drone found a new home on the bottom of the ocean at Baby Beach. This loss was caused by a mix of strong winds, poor signal, and low battery. Of course I was sad at first but since then, I’ve used it as a learning experience. I take pride in being a female drone pilot so I quickly cut my losses and invested in a DJI Mavic Mini 2. For those who may be hesitant about buying your first drone, my best advice is to do your research and just take the chance. Many drones are beginner friendly (like the DJI Mavic Mini models) and allow you to capture a whole new perspective of life. Here’s the tips that have helped me most on my drone journey.
Practice in Open Areas for the Best Controller to Drone Signal
The best way to get comfortable with flying is to practice in an open space. Flying in locations where the remote controller to drone signal is not affected by buildings or other figures is best. I usually practice in empty, open fields, or parks. Once you get the hang of using the controller, you’ll be flying it from bridges and over the ocean in no time.
Fly in Good Weather Conditions
Days that are not too windy are the perfect for flying a drone. In my experience, some drones are very lightweight and not the best for handling high winds. If you’re looking to fly in windy conditions, be sure to google drones high wind resistance.
Charge Your Batteries and Have Back-ups
The average flight time for mid-level drones is about 20 minutes and let me tell you that this 20 minutes flies! I recommend that you buy multiple batteries and a portable charging port for easier charging. The DJI drone models, for example, have package deals called fly more combos that include these extra items. If you’re planning on flying often, this is a great deal.
Back-up Your Files
I know first hand that losing content is no fun. Stay ahead of the game and download your content daily to your laptop and external drive.
Watch Youtube Videos
I’ve learned almost everything in know about drones through watching Youtube tutorials. These tutorials are great for beginners because they bring your attention to features that you may have never known existed. If you’re not sure where to start, try googling “beginner’s guide” or “first fly tips” for your drone of interest.
I challenge you to buy a drone and start making the content of your dreams. Check out my drone recommendations for beginners on my Amazon storefront here.
